Guatemala: SIP providers and connecting a number to the PBX

We do not issue numbers: the venue buys a Guatemalan number from a carrier and brings it into its own PBX as a trunk. Everything that is the same in any country — trunk modes, the form fields, the network requirements and the connectivity test — is described in the overview «Connecting a provider's number to the PBX». This page covers only the Guatemalan part: where to get a number, what to enter in the admin panel and what people trip over in this country.

The data was collected on 9–10 September 2026 from the providers' own documentation and materials of the regulator SIT; the links are in the «Sources» section.

In brief#

  • You can buy a number with a trunk for your own PBX in Guatemala. Voice is sold by carriers listed in the Registro de Telecomunicaciones of the regulator SIT: an ORC (the owner of the network) and an ORL (the one that is allocated numbering blocks). The venue itself needs no licence — a licence is needed by whoever sells telecommunications; you buy a number from a registered carrier and bring it into your own PBX.
  • The main local peculiarity is that no Guatemalan carrier publishes trunk parameters. Claro's public catalogue only shows a cloud PBX, and Tigo has a regional «Troncal SIP en la nube» page without a single figure. The host, the port, the authorisation mode and the codecs arrive in the activation letter, and before that there is correspondence with a corporate account manager.
  • The second peculiarity is more serious: at the incumbent the trunk lives inside its own access channel. In the only publicly described connection to Claro the signalling node sat on a private address, and the carrier's domain did not resolve in public DNS. A cloud PBX cannot reach such a trunk at all, and no settings will fix it — ask about a «troncal SIP por Internet público» before you sign.
  • The fast and predictable route is a number from an international aggregator. Zadarma has a Ciudad de Guatemala number (code 2): 14 USD setup, 18.2 USD per month, 2 lines included, incoming calls free. DIDWW has local +502 numbers with a bidirectional trunk. That way you avoid both homologación and the private addressing.
  • The local option with local support is Orade: Guatemalan and US numbers, multichannel trunks, integration with Asterisk and 3CX. Parameters are issued on activation.
  • A number is exactly 8 digits with no trunk prefix, while the PBX matches a line by the last seven: the first digit is dropped — the very one that distinguishes 2, 6, 7 (fixed) from 4, 5 (mobile). The numbers 2255-1234 and 7255-1234 in one account produce the same tail — with several numbers, compare them in advance.

Numbers in the country#

The country code is +502. The numbering plan is closed: there are no trunk prefixes and no area codes, inside the country you dial all 8 digits, and outbound you dial 00 plus the number in international format.

Number type National format In E.164 Who issues it
Fixed, Zona Metropolitana (the capital and part of the Guatemala department) 2ABC XXXX — 8 digits +502 2ABC XXXX carriers with ORL status
Fixed, Zona Metropolitana Suburbana (the remaining municipalities of the department) 6ABC XXXX +502 6ABC XXXX carriers with ORL status
Fixed, Zona Interurbana (Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, El Petén, Izabal and other departments) 7ABC XXXX +502 7ABC XXXX carriers with ORL status
Mobile 3XXX XXXX, 4XXX XXXX, 5XXX XXXX +502 4XXX XXXX mobile carriers
Free for the caller inside the country 1-801 XXX XXXX — charged to the party receiving the call carriers and international aggregators
Paid by the caller (premium information services) 1-901 XXX XXXX carriers
  • The editions of the numbering plan disagree about mobile series. The PDF on the SIT website calls 4 and 5 the mobile codes, while the «Rangos de Numeración» page of the same regulator lists 3, 4 and 5; series 3 is marked as reserved in the PDF, although in practice 3XXX XXXX numbers work as mobile ones. This does not matter for configuring the PBX, but when you analyse ranges, rely on the page rather than the PDF.
  • Short and service series. 11X and 12X are assistance and emergency services; the 911 XXXX series was assigned to the Centro Nacional de Emergencias by resolution SIT-340-2002. 15XX are state and NGO information services, 17XX are commercial directory services, and 13X/14X/16X are carrier codes of the 1ZY form used for operator-assisted long-distance calls. Emergency calls do not work through a number bought from an international aggregator — keep a mobile phone on shift.
  • The form in which the number arrives in an incoming call. Local carriers do not describe this publicly — ask on activation. The only clue: at Claro the trunk login is the number in the +502 plus 8 digits form, so the carrier thinks of the number in E.164 with a leading plus. International aggregators normally send E.164.
  • How this maps onto the PBX. The line is looked up by the last seven digits, while the number has eight: the first digit is dropped. A fixed 2255-1234 and an interurban 7255-1234 bought into the same account will collapse into one line — separate such numbers with routing rules or do not put them in the same location.
  • Dialling out: inside the country the 8 digits as they are, internationally 00 plus the number. Which format your particular carrier expects (8 digits, 502 plus 8 digits or +502 plus 8 digits) should be clarified on activation: there is no single practice on this market.

Who issues a number with a SIP trunk#

Provider Which numbers Trunk for your own PBX Mode How to order
netelip a Guatemalan market storefront; confirm the availability of Guatemalan numbering with support yes, two products: «Línea SIP» and «SIP Trunking» both: Línea SIP — REGISTER, SIP Trunking — by IP self-service in the control panel
Orade Guatemalan and US numbers yes — «Troncales Multicanal» with DIDs told on activation a request on the website or a call to the office
Claro Guatemala (Telgua) fixed, mobile, 1-801 yes, a «troncal SIP» — a non-public product issued after homologación of the PBX told in the connection form corporate account managers
Tigo Guatemala (Millicom) fixed, mobile yes — «Troncal SIP en la nube» told under contract Tigo Business corporate managers
AstraQom local +502 and toll-free yes — «SIP trunks for any PBX», from 9 USD per channel per month told on activation a request on the website, KYC handled for you
IPComms no Guatemalan numbers, US numbers only yes — a trunk for call centres in Guatemala that call the US told in the control panel online sign-up
Liberty Networks Guatemala no public retail numbering the catalogue only has unified communications corporate account manager
IFX Networks Guatemala no public retail numbering the catalogue has UCaaS and contact centre, no trunk to a third-party PBX corporate account manager
Cirion Technologies «números locales» by region; presence in Guatemala not confirmed the SIP Voice product exists in the region corporate account manager
Corsario Telecom · SIP Guatemala no numbering of their own no — on-site installation and maintenance of a PBX a contractor, not a source of a number
Zadarma · DIDWW · Twilio Guatemalan numbers (at Twilio, mobile only) yes registration or by IP online, see «International providers»

Below is the card of the provider whose parameters are published, and a review of the rest. Local carriers tell you the server address, the port and the mode after the contract; what exactly to ask is in «What to ask the provider».

netelip — the only provider with published parameters#

A Spanish telephony carrier with a dedicated «Telefonía IP para empresas en Guatemala» storefront. It is the only supplier on this market whose parameters are published and verifiable: the Latin American node sip-am.netelip.com, port 5060, UDP. There are two products and they authorise differently: «Línea SIP» always works by registration, up to 30 simultaneous calls; «SIP Trunking» works by IP only, with the destination address for incoming calls and the source IP with the port set in the control panel.

⚠️ Whether netelip sells Guatemalan numbers specifically could not be confirmed from public materials: the country is in the market switcher of the website, but we did not find it in the list of numbering countries. Ask support before you pay — on the rest of this market you only get parameters after a contract, so this question is worth one email.

What to enter in the admin panel for «Línea SIP» (Telephony → «Trunks and connections» → «Add provider»):

Field Value
SIP host sip-am.netelip.com — the node for Latin America
Port 5060
Transport UDP
Registration «Register with the provider (REGISTER)» — this product has no other mode
Login the SIP user from the «Configurador de Dispositivos» section of the control panel
Password the SIP password from the same place

What to enter in the admin panel for «SIP Trunking»:

Field Value
SIP host sip-am.netelip.com (customers outside Latin America are given the sip-eu.netelip.com node)
Port 5060
Transport UDP
Registration «IP-auth (no registration)» — this product does not accept registration at all
Login not used
Password not used

What to set up at the provider: confirm that a Guatemalan number is available and buy it → in «Línea SIP» → «Configurador de Dispositivos» take the login and the password → in the codecs enable G.711 A-law/µ-law → in «Identificador de llamada» set the number for outgoing calls → in the «SIP Trunking» product enter the static IP of your PBX from the «Server» tab and the source port.

Pitfalls ⚠️ The default codec is G.729, which the PBX does not have: without G.711 explicitly enabled the signalling will look healthy while there is no audio in either direction. «SIP Trunking» checks not only the address but also the source port: a mismatch means rejection, so do not change the trunk port in this mode. Outgoing calls go out with the number hidden until «Identificador de llamada» is set.

Orade — a local number and local support#

An integrator and telecom reseller from Ciudad de Guatemala (office PBX +502 2329-6200): a 3CX Platinum Partner, Issabel and Asterisk, Sangoma, Yeastar, Grandstream. The «Troncal SIP y DID» section describes exactly our scenario: «Números telefónicos empresariales de Guatemala, USA y la mayoría de países del mundo. Troncales Multicanal», with compatibility declared for Sangoma PBXact, FreePBX, 3CX, Grandstream, Yeastar «o cualquier otra planta telefónica IP». Billing is a bolsón de minutos (a prepaid bundle or a contract), and the control panel has CDR reports and separate billing sections for the Guatemalan and the US trunk.

There is no «what to enter» table here: Orade does not publish the host, the port or the authorisation mode and tells them in the activation letter. The declared compatibility with FreePBX and Asterisk means ordinary SIP over UDP, but do not put that into the form as a guess — wait for the letter.

What to ask before the contract: the server address, the port and the transport → the authorisation mode (registration or an IP allowlist) → whether G.711 A-law/µ-law is enabled rather than G.729 only → the number format in the incoming call and in outbound dialling → and separately: whose numbering this is and through whom termination goes. The full list of questions is in «What to ask the provider».

Pitfalls ⚠️ Orade is a reseller, not the holder of the numbering: behind the number there is still a carrier with ORL status, and the quality of the calls depends on it. In disputes and re-registrations you will have to go through the intermediary. Prices are not published on the website — request a quote.

Claro and Tigo — a trunk under contract#

Both incumbents do have a «troncal SIP», but it is sold by corporate account managers and the parameters are not published at all. The question that applies to both: is the trunk tied exclusively to their own last mile. For carriers of this class the default scenario is «our access channel and our addressing», and a cloud PBX cannot reach such a trunk.

  • Claro Guatemala (Telecomunicaciones de Guatemala, S.A. — Telgua) is the fixed-line incumbent and the largest mobile carrier in the country (after buying Movistar Guatemala from Telefónica in January 2019). The public business catalogue shows PBX Cloud, the 1800/1801 numbers, the «Digi 4» short number, corporate internet and data links — there is no «troncal SIP» page there. The trunk is issued after a homologación process: the carrier first checks the model and the version of your PBX and only then hands over a form with the credentials. ⚠️ In the only publicly described connection the carrier's signalling proxy sat on a private address of the access channel, and the core domain did not resolve in public DNS — the customer was told to write it into the system hosts file on their own server. For a cloud PBX this is a stopper: ask directly whether there is a trunk over the public internet. The codecs in that working configuration were alaw and ulaw, so on codecs the pairing is possible.
  • Tigo Guatemala (Comunicaciones Celulares, S.A. — Millicom) is the second large carrier. The «Troncal SIP en la nube» product is described on the regional Millicom storefront: «Conecte su central telefónica en la nube a la red pública mediante una solución SIP segura, escalable y compatible con plataformas como Cloud PBX y Contact Center», with Guatemala in the list of countries. Neither the host, nor the port, nor the codecs, nor the authorisation mode are published. ⚠️ In marketing «Troncal SIP en la nube» often means «our cloud PBX plus a trunk to it» rather than a trunk out to somebody else's switch: settle this in writing, before signing. Fixed telephony at Tigo has historically been sold over its own fibre channel — that is the second question for the manager. What to request from both: a trunk over the public internet with termination on the customer's cloud PBX with a static IP → adding our address from the «Server» tab to the allowlist → enabling G.711 A/µ → routing the purchased numbers to the trunk → the number format in the incoming call.

Providers that do not publish parameters#

AstraQom, IPComms, Liberty Networks, IFX Networks, Cirion, Corsario Telecom
  • AstraQom is an international B2B carrier with a country page: «+502 business numbers, SIP trunking, hosted PBX, contact centre», the cities being Ciudad de Guatemala, Quetzaltenango and Antigua. The trunk is advertised from 9 USD per channel per month with per-second billing, number activation takes 1–3 business days, porting 2–4 weeks, the SLA is 99.9 %, and the carrier handles the number paperwork itself. ⚠️ The whole page is marketing: no host, no port, no authorisation mode, no codecs. Before paying, ask in writing for the host, the port, the mode, the codecs and whose numbering it is in Guatemala.
  • IPComms is an American SIP provider with a page dedicated to Guatemala: «$0 por canal SIP», 0.010 USD per minute for outgoing calls to the US and Canada, 0.009 USD per minute for incoming calls, US numbers from 1.50 USD per month, support in Spanish and English around the clock. ⚠️ IPComms has no Guatemalan numbers — this is a trunk for a call centre in Guatemala that calls the US, not a source of a local +502. The advertised 55–90 ms latency is measured from Guatemala to servers in the US; the leg to your PBX is added on top.
  • Liberty Networks Guatemala, Limitada is the corporate arm of Liberty Latin America (the former C&W Business and C&W Networks). The public catalogue has connectivity, cybersecurity, networking and unified communications; no separate SIP trunk to a third-party PBX and no retail numbering of its own is advertised. Ask a corporate account manager. Not to be confused with the retail brand.
  • IFX Networks Guatemala (Livister Guatemala, S.A.) is a Latin American managed provider, present in the country since 2018. The catalogue has managed cloud, network, security and solutions, with UCaaS and a contact centre inside the latter; a «SIP trunk to a third-party PBX» is not advertised as a separate product. ⚠️ Providers of this type sell their own platform, and pairing with somebody else's Asterisk is an exception rather than a product.
  • Cirion Technologies is a regional carrier with the SIP Voice product: a «solución de voz IP nativa» with certified interoperability with traditional and IP PBXs, local numbers, working both over a private network and over the public internet. ⚠️ The list of countries is not published on the product page, and we could not confirm that the service is available in Guatemala specifically — check with the carrier.
  • Corsario Telecom (Ciudad de Guatemala, +502 2300-9923) and SIP Guatemala are local contractors: structured cabling and CCTV installation, Panasonic and Grandstream phone supply, on-site PBX installation and maintenance. They have no numbering and no trunk of their own — hire them as local hands, and buy the number from a carrier or an international aggregator.

International providers with Guatemalan numbers#

A Guatemalan number is sold without a local legal entity as well, and on this market that is the most predictable route. Trunk parameters at such providers are the same for all countries, and the Zadarma and Twilio cards are already in the catalogue when you add a provider — the server address and the mode are filled in for you; the Guatemalan specifics are all in the paperwork for the number.

  • Zadarma — a Ciudad de Guatemala number (code 2): 14 USD setup, 18.2 USD per month (14 USD when paid annually), prices including taxes, 2 lines included, incoming calls to the number are free. The carrier explicitly allows connecting the number «to your PC, SIP gate, office PBX… or any other device that supports SIP», that is to our PBX by registration.
  • DIDWW — local +502 numbers with a bidirectional SIP trunk; both modes are supported, a static endpoint and dynamic registration. Check the paperwork requirements in the control panel before ordering.
  • Twilio — in Guatemala it sells mobile numbers only, +5023; there are no fixed ones. The owner's address may be anywhere in the world: an individual needs a Guatemalan ID or a passport for foreigners plus proof of address, a company needs a business registration document with an address. The trunk is Elastic SIP Trunking, the mode is by IP or by credential list, there is no registration.
  • AstraQom — local +502 and toll-free numbers, with the carrier handling the paperwork for the customer; the parameters come in the activation letter, see the section above.
  • Telnyx — there is no dedicated Guatemala requirements page in its knowledge base; check the availability of Guatemalan numbering in the control panel before ordering.
  • Common to all international providers: only your own number is released outbound, and emergency calls through such a number do not work. For a venue with a dining room that is an argument for a local line.

Number porting#

  • The law has been passed, the mechanism is not there yet. Decreto 14-2025 «Ley de Portabilidad Numérica en Servicios de Telefonía» was approved by Congress on 11 November 2025 and came into force on 28 November 2025; under its article 13 the regulator SIT was obliged to issue the regulations within two months.
  • As of September 2026 there are no regulations. An amparo was filed because of their absence, the positions of SIT and the state attorney's office differ, and on 24 August 2026 the president only said that the document was with the Secretaría General de la Presidencia and «could soon become a reality».
  • The practical conclusion: you cannot schedule moving the venue's existing number. International aggregators do promise porting (AstraQom says «2–4 weeks»), but they run into the same missing regulations.
  • Publications about the law are mostly about mobile telephony — for fixed numbers confirm the applicability with the receiving carrier.
  • The number stays with the holder of the contract. If the number is registered to the owner as an individual under a DPI, changing the tenant or the legal entity will require re-signing the contract with the carrier — porting does not solve that. Fix the fate of the number in the premises lease.
  • ⚠️ Changing the public address of the PBX breaks a trunk with IP authorisation. When the dedicated machine is recreated, give the provider the new address in advance, otherwise the trunk will die silently.

Rules and paperwork#

SIT registries, paperwork for a number, a foreign company, call recording
  • Who may sell voice. The market is opened by the Ley General de Telecomunicaciones (Decreto 94-96), and the regulator is SIT (Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones), which keeps the Registro de Telecomunicaciones and administers the Plan Nacional de Numeración. There are three registries: ORC (Operador de Red Comercial — owns and administers a network, registration before operations start, a Q 5,100 fee), ORL (Operador de Red Local — provides telephone services and therefore receives numbering blocks and interconnection, a Q 2,500 fee) and OPI (Operador de Puerto Internacional — international traffic, a Q 7,500 fee plus quarterly reporting).
  • A venue needs no licence. It is needed by whoever sells telecommunications to subscribers. Your PBX is the internal telephony of the company: extensions, a greeting, a queue, recording and call analysis. The number is bought from a carrier listed in the SIT registry.
  • The carrier's registration paperwork (for reference, if your supplier is local and new): the incorporation deed and its amendments, the act appointing the legal representative, the company and corporate patents, the representative's DPI, the RTU tax registration and a network diagram.
  • Paperwork for a number at local carriers. Neither Claro nor Tigo publishes a list: the contract goes to a local legal entity or to an individual with a DPI. Request the list from the manager together with the trunk parameters.
  • A foreign company can get a local number — in practice only through an international aggregator. At Twilio the owner's address may be in any country in the world (but the numbers are mobile only), AstraQom handles the paperwork for the customer, and at DIDWW the requirements are shown in the control panel. With local carriers a contract with a foreign company is a rare exception.
  • Call recording and personal data. We did not find a general personal data protection law in Guatemala comparable to the European one in force. Turn on the voice notice about recording at the start of the call anyway — that is our general policy and what the guest is entitled to.
  • Caller ID spoofing on outbound calls. We found no explicit prohibition in Guatemalan rules, but in practice a carrier only releases the numbers of your contract. Fill the «Show as» field with agreed numbers, otherwise the carrier will silently replace the number or reject the call.

If it does not work#

  1. The trunk is tied to the carrier's access channel. This is the most common local cause: in the described Claro connection the signalling proxy sat on a private address and the domain did not resolve in public DNS. Such a trunk is unreachable from the cloud in principle and no settings will fix it — insist on a «troncal SIP por Internet público» before signing the contract.
  2. Registration is green, but calls do not go through in either direction. At Claro this is the standard symptom of an unfinished homologación: the carrier has not opened your trunk yet, even though the credentials have been accepted. Write to the manager instead of reshuffling settings.
  3. Registration is green, but there is no audio. Almost always the codecs: netelip has G.729 by default, which the PBX does not speak. Enable G.711 A-law/µ-law on the provider's side — with this fault the signalling looks perfectly healthy.
  4. netelip: the «SIP Trunking» trunk does not register. And it should not — this product accepts IP authorisation only. Either clear the registration checkbox and give the provider the static IP of the PBX from the «Server» tab, or order «Línea SIP», which on the contrary only works by registration.
  5. A call to the second number is handled by the scenario of the first one. The line is looked up by the last seven digits, while a Guatemalan number has eight: the first digit is dropped and 2255-1234 merges with 7255-1234 into one line. Separate such numbers with routing rules.
  6. Outgoing calls go out with the number hidden. At netelip the outgoing number is hidden by default: set it in «Identificador de llamada». The carrier will not let somebody else's number through anyway.
  7. The carrier requires the number in the P-Asserted-Identity header. This happens with incumbents running an IMS core; our PBX does not send that header, and the pairing will not work in this form — ask them to accept the number the ordinary way.

The remaining common causes are in the general section of the overview; checking the address and the port is «Check the connection».

Frequently asked questions#

Does a venue in Guatemala need its own licence to receive calls in a PBX?#

No. Registration in the SIT registries — ORC, ORL or OPI — is needed by whoever sells telecommunications: owns a network, receives numbering blocks or carries international traffic. The venue buys a number from such a carrier, and its own PBX remains the internal telephony of the company: extensions, a queue, recording and call analysis.

Why can't I just take the host and the port from a local carrier's website?#

Because they are not there. Neither Claro, nor Tigo, nor Orade publishes the server address, the port, the codecs or the authorisation mode: the parameters come in the connection form or the activation letter. The only supplier with published parameters on this market is netelip. Putting «typical» values into the form is pointless: the trunk will reject the call or silently fail to register.

Can a foreign company buy a Guatemalan number?#

Through an international aggregator, yes. At Twilio the owner's address may be in any country in the world, but the numbers in Guatemala are mobile only, +5023. AstraQom handles the paperwork for the customer and activates a number in 1–3 business days, and at DIDWW and Zadarma the requirements are shown in the control panel when ordering. Local carriers sign contracts with a Guatemalan legal entity or an individual with a DPI.

Can the venue's existing number be moved to another carrier?#

Right now, essentially no. The portability law (Decreto 14-2025) came into force on 28 November 2025, but as of September 2026 SIT has still not issued the regulations, so there is no working porting mechanism. Plan for a new number, and leave the old one with the current carrier and forward it until the regulations appear.

Is a number from an international provider enough as the venue's only number?#

As a working number, yes — it brings calls into the PBX without any local contract, and it is the fastest route: a Ciudad de Guatemala number at Zadarma costs 14 USD to set up and 18.2 USD per month with two lines included. But emergency calls do not go through such a number, so keep a mobile phone on shift, and for the «number on the sign» consider a fixed number from a local carrier.
