Where to get a number with a SIP trunk in Ghana, which parameters providers issue and what to enter in the admin panel so the number rings in the PBX

Ghana: SIP providers and connecting a number to your PBX

We do not issue phone numbers: the venue buys a Ghanaian number from a provider and connects it to its own PBX as a trunk. Everything that is the same in every country — trunk modes, form fields, network requirements and connectivity checks — is covered in the overview “Connecting a provider's number to your PBX”. This page covers only the Ghanaian part: where to get a number, what to enter in the admin panel and what people trip over in this country.

The data was collected on 10 September 2026 from provider websites and documents of the regulator NCA; links are in the “Sources” section.

In brief#

  • You can buy a trunk for your own PBX in Ghana: the licence is required from the seller, not from the venue. The Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775, s. 3(1)) prohibits providing a voice telephony service without an NCA licence — that is a requirement on the supplier. A venue's corporate PBX needs no licence of its own, but buy the trunk only from a holder of a licence or authorisation from the regulator.
  • The defining feature of this market is that almost nobody publishes trunk parameters. Not a single Ghanaian carrier's page states a host, a port or an authorisation mode. The only provider whose parameters are confirmed by a third party is AntCellular: Yeastar's table of certified trunk providers lists it as register based, with the G.711 u-law, G.711 a-law, G.722 and G.729a codecs and RFC 4733 DTMF.
  • The only carrier whose official document describes our setup is Telecel Ghana with its “SIP Connect” product: its FAQ names the supported PBXs outright (“Grandstream, 3CX, Cisco, Avaya and FreePBX” — that is, Asterisk) and answers “Yes” to the question about a static IP. It still publishes no parameters, and its promise to “encrypt voice traffic” must be your first question: our PBX supports neither TLS nor SRTP on trunks.
  • MTN SIP Trunk exists but is a black box until you negotiate, and AT Ghana's product page was not filled in at all as of 10.09.2026 — it still carries placeholder text.
  • The number has nine digits, while a line is matched on the last seven. The carrier or area code never makes it into the match: 030 2123456 (Accra) and 032 2123456 (Kumasi) share a tail, and so do 024 1234567 (MTN) and 020 1234567 (Telecel).
  • Incoming international traffic costs at least US$ 0.19 per minute by law. That is an official NCA rule, and it is why a Ghanaian number bought from a foreign aggregator is expensive: Twilio's termination into Ghana is $0.4875 per minute to fixed lines and $0.5278 to mobiles.

Numbers in Ghana#

The country code is +233. The national dialling prefix is 0, the international prefix is 00. The national number (N(S)N) is exactly 9 digits: in the NCA numbering plan the minimum and maximum lengths are the same. On a venue's leaflet the number looks like 0XX XXX XXXX; in international format it is +233XXXXXXXXX.

  • No Ghanaian provider publishes the form in which the number arrives on an incoming call. Be ready for any of three: international format without the plus (233302123456), the national nine digits (302123456) or the trunk login instead of a number. On the first connection check the SIP trace to see what the provider sends, and only then create your lines.
  • A seven-digit tail. A line is matched on the last seven digits, while the number has nine — the first two are always lost. Even 0800 123 456 and 0900 123 456 collide. One number per venue is safe; with two or more, check the tails by hand.
  • Codecs. The only publicly confirmed set in the country is AntCellular's via the Yeastar certification: G.711 u-law, G.711 a-law, G.722 and G.729a. G.711 and G.722 are enough for us; we do not have G.729a, so do not ask for it.
  • Emergency numbers are 112 (single number), 191 police, 192 fire, 193 ambulance. Emergency calls are not served through our PBX — keep an ordinary phone on the premises.

Below is the card of the only provider whose parameters are known in advance, then the carriers: they do have trunks, but the credentials arrive with the provisioning order. The full list of questions for the sales manager is in “What to ask your provider”.

AntCellular — the only confirmed parameters in the country#

A Ghanaian value-added telecom provider operating since 2015, based in Accra (Twin Plaza, Devtraco High Street), with its own toll-free number 0800 100 100. It claims direct interconnects with MTN, Telecel and AT. Products: toll-free 0800 numbers (FreeCall/FreeTxt), premium 0900 numbers (CallPlus/TxtPlus), short codes, SMS and USSD gateways, its own cloud PBX and — the part that matters to us — “Enterprise SIP Trunking”: “carrier-grade voice termination for your local or cloud PBX”.

This is the only provider in Ghana whose parameters are confirmed by someone other than its own website: it is listed among Yeastar's certified SIP trunk providers for Ghana, where the provider type is “Register Based”, the codecs are “G711 u-law, G711 a-law, G722, G729a” and DTMF is “RFC4733”. Its own site adds IP authentication, 500+ concurrent calls and compatibility with “3CX, Avaya, Asterisk”.

What to enter in the admin panel (Telephony → “Trunks and connections” → “Add provider”):

What to set up on the provider's side: order a trunk with the number of channels you need → choose the mode (registration, or your static IP from the “Server” tab in their allowlist) → ask for the host, port and transport in writing → keep G.711 a-law/u-law and G.722 among the codecs → point the 0800/0900 numbers you bought at the trunk → allow voice traffic to your address.

Pitfalls ⚠️

  • It most likely will not give you a geographic Accra number. Its own ranges are only 0800 and 0900; if the venue needs a fixed 030 number, ask — before paying — whether it resells partner networks' numbers.
  • The host, port and transport are not published. The values in the table are the usual behaviour of a register-based trunk; take the final ones from the provisioning e-mail.
  • The prices on the site come from a calculator, not from a tariff sheet: the order of magnitude is 2,000 Ghanaian cedis to set up a trunk plus 500 per month, and 1,500 plus 400 per month for a toll-free 0800 number; choosing “all networks” instead of one multiplies the bill roughly by 2.5. Confirm with an invoice.
  • Do not confuse the websites: the company's old business-card site on a free website builder is still in search results and knows nothing about SIP trunking.

Telecel Ghana — “SIP Connect” for your own PBX#

The country's incumbent (Ghana Telecom → Vodafone Ghana → Telecel Ghana) and the holder of the main geographic numbering. The product sits in the fixed services section, and its official FAQ is the document closest to our setup in the whole country:

  • “It's ideal for businesses that already have an IP PBX”; “we support popular brands like Grandstream, 3CX, Cisco, Avaya, and FreePBX” — FreePBX is Asterisk, that is, our engine;
  • “Do I need a static IP address? Yes — a static IP ensures your PBX is always reachable”; a dedicated PBX has a static address, shown on the “Server” tab;
  • capacity is counted in channels: “each channel supports one concurrent call”, from a few channels to hundreds, added instantly;
  • it works over your existing data network, though the carrier recommends configuring QoS on it;
  • if the link fails, incoming calls are diverted to mobile numbers or another location.

There is deliberately no “what to enter” table here: Telecel does not publish the host, port, transport or authorisation mode — they arrive with the provisioning order. Filling the form with “typical” values is pointless.

What to ask before signing: do you deliver the trunk over the public internet to our static IP, or only over your own managed link? → registration or an IP allowlist, and which host, port and transport? → is plain UDP or TCP without encryption available — this is the key question, because the FAQ promises to encrypt voice traffic while our PBX supports neither TLS nor SRTP on trunks → which codecs are allowed on the trunk (we need at least one of G.711 a-law, G.711 u-law, G.722)? → what goes into the called number on an incoming call? → how many channels are in the plan?

MTN and AT Ghana — a trunk by contract#

  • MTN Ghana (Scancom PLC) — the country's largest network. Its corporate umbrella MTN Unicom names the product outright: “MTN SIP Trunk uses a VoIP link, allowing customers to connect their PBX or telephone system to MTN's core network”, with infrastructure “hosted in secure MTN data centers”. No long-term contracts, number portability and scalability are advertised. Not a single parameter is given; the entry point is a “Request a call back” button. ⚠️ Ask first whether the trunk runs over the public internet or only over MTN's managed link: the latter is a blocker for a cloud PBX. ⚠️ Do not confuse it with the neighbouring products in the same line: MTN Fixed Voice (GHS 40 per month per number, GHS 25 per user) and MTN Hosted PBX are the carrier's own PBX instead of ours, not a trunk to it; the number price is useful only as a benchmark.
  • AT Ghana (ex-AirtelTigo) — the third carrier, state-owned since 2021. Its business catalogue has a “Dedicated Sip Trunks (VoIP)” tile in the fixed services section, but the product page has never been filled in: as of 10.09.2026 it still carries placeholder text instead of a description. You cannot judge the product by the tile — it is not even clear whether this is a trunk out to your PBX or equipment on your premises. There is one route: the AT Business corporate desk and the same questions you would put to MTN.

Who sells telecom services but no trunk to your PBX#

Teledata, K-Net, Comsys, local integrators, Glo, and Surfline which has left the market
  • Teledata Technologies (Teledata ICT) — one of the country's oldest internet providers, listed as operational in the NCA register of authorised providers. Its corporate section sells “Enterprise Voice Solutions” — its own cloud PBX, “a pure software based solution that eliminates the need for most onsite hardware”. No trunk to a third-party PBX and no numbers of its own are advertised; if you are interested in them, ask about a trunk separately. An internet provider's authorisation, incidentally, does not grant the right to sell voice — that is a different category.
  • K-Net Limited — an authorised satellite and regional access provider. The only telephony item on its site is “Rural Telephonys”, with no parameters and no numbers.
  • Comsys Ghana Limited — an authorised access provider with a business-card website that says nothing about voice or SIP. Not a source of numbers.
  • Telesys ICT Ghana, TrueData Systems, E-Cube Technologies, Vector Technology — local integrators and Yeastar/3CX partners. They install PBXs and connect other people's trunks; E-Cube says as much: “interoperable with worldwide SIP trunks/ITSP”. They are useful as hands on site — handsets, LAN, QoS — but the numbers are not theirs. Beware of the self-description “VoIP SIP service provider”: in Ghana it usually means reselling PBXs, not issuing numbers.
  • Glo Mobile Ghana — the fourth mobile operator (the 023 range); it publishes no corporate SIP trunk.
  • Surfline Communications — the country's first 4G network, which has left the market (shut down in 2023); it had no voice services even before that. You will meet it in older reviews — it is no longer an option.

None of them needs a “what to enter” table: such companies do not issue a SIP host, port, transport, authorisation mode, username or password.

International providers with Ghanaian numbers#

Buying a Ghanaian number from abroad is harder than in most countries. What is confirmed by provider documents as of 10.09.2026:

  • DIDWW — its country page states plainly that local SIP trunking in Ghana is unavailable; only international termination is offered. It does not sell +233 numbers.
  • Twilio — sells mobile numbers only in Ghana at USD 27.00 per month, and “Ghana mobile numbers are not available to individuals”. A company needs a certificate of incorporation, a letter of authorisation and an address within Ghana — without a presence in the country you will not get a number. Termination into Ghana: USD 0.4875 per minute to fixed lines, USD 0.5278 to mobiles.
  • AstraQom — the only international provider with published Ghana packages: STARTER at USD 61 per month (1 number, 1 line, 100 minutes to Ghanaian fixed and mobile numbers), CORPORATE at USD 96 (2 lines, 200 minutes), DELUXE at USD 132; an extra number is USD 37.50 per month and setup is USD 27.50. The model is stated outright: “bring your existing PBX — we provide the dial tone”.
  • Telnyx — a Ghana virtual numbers page exists, but actual availability is only visible in the portal: check before paying.
  • CommPeak, AVOXI, PBX.IM — they advertise Ghanaian numbers (local, non-geographic, toll-free) and SIP trunking, but with no parameters and no prices on their pages. Confirm the number type and its availability in writing.

Trunk parameters at international providers are the same in every country and are described in the catalogue cards used when adding a provider: most use registration with a username and password from your account area, some use IP authorisation.

⚠️ Two general caveats. First, the number is issued through a local partner, so the venue has no direct relationship with a Ghanaian carrier — which matters if a number is ever disputed. Second, the statutory floor of US$ 0.19 per minute on incoming international traffic explains both Twilio's prices and why a “Ghanaian number for ten dollars” only ever appears on reseller storefronts.

Number porting#

  • Mobile number portability has worked since 2011 — NCA regulations (L.I. 1994), service code 600. The application is filed with the new operator: “a subscriber who requests the porting of a number is not required to contact the donor operator”, and the donor must respond or object within 4 hours of being notified. Porting is free for the subscriber. In practice: visit the new operator's shop with your Ghana Card and fill in the porting request form.
  • Fixed numbers are not covered by this framework. The regulations are titled mobile number portability, and we could not find a separate instrument for fixed numbers. The practical conclusion: a fixed 03X number is tied to its carrier, and changing your trunk provider means changing the number. The “number portability” claim on MTN's trunk page refers to mobile numbers — do not read it more broadly.
  • Register the number to the company from the start. Numbers are registered against a Ghana Card: a holder may have at most 10 SIMs and a foreigner 3, while corporate numbers are tied to directors and shareholders. A number registered to an employee leaves with them.
  • ⚠️ Changing the PBX's public address breaks a trunk that uses IP authorisation. Warn the provider in advance when the dedicated machine is rebuilt.

Rules and paperwork#

The NCA regulator, licences, the price floor on incoming international traffic, documents for a number, call recording
  • The regulator is the National Communications Authority (NCA), Airport City, Accra, info@nca.org.gh, +233 302 776621. The base law is the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) as amended.
  • Who may sell voice. Act 775, s. 3(1): a person shall not operate a public electronic communications service or network or provide a voice telephony service without a licence from the Authority; s. 3(10) allows a class licence instead of an individual one. The sanctions are serious: up to 9,000 penalty units for a legal entity, and each of its directors is deemed to have committed the offence. For a venue this is not a prohibition but a selection criterion: buy the trunk from a holder of an NCA licence or authorisation.
  • Licence categories. The NCA has Mobile Cellular, Fixed Licence (voice over wireline networks), MVNO, International Wholesale Carrier, Internet/Public Data Service, International Inbound Traffic, numbering licences and Value Added Services. There is no separate “VoIP” category — local trunk providers operate as value-added service providers plus interconnects with carriers.
  • The price floor on incoming international traffic. The NCA's wording is direct: a network operator is enjoined by law to charge a minimum rate of US$ 0.19 per minute for all incoming international electronic communications traffic; the regulator must monitor compliance and may carry out inspections.
  • Public registers. The NCA publishes a list of authorised internet providers (78 companies in the Q2 2025 edition). We could not find a public register of voice licence holders on the regulator's site: confirm a supplier's status with a copy of its authorisation or by an enquiry to the NCA.
  • Documents for a number. Number registration is tied to the national Ghana Card; a corporate service adds the usual contract with a legal entity. A foreign company without a presence in Ghana will struggle: even Twilio requires a Ghanaian address, a certificate of incorporation and a letter of authorisation.
  • The number you show on outgoing calls. We found no separate NCA instrument on caller ID spoofing, but assume that only the numbers on your own contract may be sent out: the price floor on incoming international traffic and the regulator's campaign against bypass gateways make a “foreign” calling number conspicuous to a carrier. In the “Show as” field use only the numbers issued to you.
  • Call recording. The relevant law is the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843), supervised by the Data Protection Commission. Our own rule does not depend on the country: a voice notice about recording at the start of the call is mandatory, in English as the official language.
  • Emergency calls are not served through the PBX — dial 112, 191, 192 or 193 from an ordinary phone.

If it does not work#

  1. The provider says it encrypts voice traffic, or offers port 5061. That is TLS, and our PBX supports only UDP and TCP without encryption on trunks; there is no SRTP either. Ask for plain UDP 5060; if the interconnect is encrypted only, the pairing will not happen — look for another supplier.
  2. The trunk is delivered only over the carrier's own link. With Ghanaian carriers the service is tied to their own access circuit, while our dedicated PBX lives in a cloud. Ask about this before paying; if the answer is “over our link only”, take AntCellular or an international aggregator.
  3. The call connects but there is silence. Usually a codec mismatch: Ghanaian suppliers include G.729a, which we do not have. Ask them to enable G.711 a-law/u-law on the trunk explicitly.
  4. Two numbers merged into one line. A line is matched on the last seven digits, while a Ghanaian number has nine: 030 2123456 and 032 2123456 share a tail. Pick numbers with different tails, or use one per venue.
  5. Registration is green but no calls arrive. Check that the number is pointed at your trunk in the provider's account area and that the “Accepts calls” checkbox on the line is still ticked; then look at the SIP trace to see the form the number arrives in — international format, nine digits or the trunk login.
  6. Incoming calls from abroad cost more than expected. This is not a configuration error: the minimum price per minute of incoming international traffic is set by the regulator.

Frequently asked questions#

Can a Ghanaian number be connected to my own PBX at all?#

Yes. Act 775 requires a licence from whoever provides the communications service, not from the subscriber: a venue's corporate PBX needs no licence. The venue buys the number and the trunk from a licensed supplier and terminates them on its own PBX.

Who should I approach first?#

If you need a fixed or mobile number, start with Telecel “SIP Connect”: it is the only Ghanaian carrier whose official document names FreePBX and requires a static IP, so its model matches ours in shape. If a toll-free 0800 number is enough and speed matters, take AntCellular: its parameters are known in advance. MTN is the third option — the largest network, but a black box until you negotiate.

Will AntCellular give me a geographic Accra number?#

Most likely not: its own ranges are toll-free 0800 and premium 0900. Ask in writing before paying whether it resells partner networks' numbers, and plan to buy a fixed 030 number from a carrier.

Do I need a static IP?#

Yes, and a dedicated PBX already has one — the value is shown on the “Server” tab. Telecel requires a static address in so many words, and the others ask for it for their allowlists. Even with ordinary registration the address is usually requested in advance.

Can I buy a Ghanaian number without a company in Ghana?#

Barely. Ghanaian carriers work under a local contract, Twilio sells only mobile numbers in Ghana and requires an address in the country, and DIDWW offers no Ghanaian numbers at all. The realistic workaround is an AstraQom package (from USD 61 per month) or another aggregator, but the number there is issued through a local partner.

Can I port my fixed number to another provider?#

A mobile one, yes: portability rules have applied since 2011, the application is filed with the new operator and it is free for the subscriber. A fixed number is not covered by those rules, and we found no separate instrument for fixed numbers: expect to change the number when you change carriers.

How long will connection take?#

With AntCellular, days: a request, the setup payment and an e-mail with the trunk credentials. With the carriers (Telecel, MTN, AT), weeks: a corporate contract, verification of the legal entity and a provisioning order.
